Plants
Akrotiri Peninsula is also a botanical hotspot in Cyprus, due its diversity of habitats, with hundreds of indigenous plant taxa, out of which 30 plant species are nationally rare and threatened and included in the Red Data Book of the Cyprus Flora.
The characterisation of plants as rare and endangered is because of their small population or because of the threats and pressures affecting them; and these plant species need appropriate measures for their protection and conservation. For some plants such as Ipomoea sagittata, Euphorbia hirsuta, Orchis palustris and Baldellia ranunculoides, the Akrotiri marsh is one of the few known site in Cyprus, where these plants exist.
Some important plants that are listed in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus at Akrotiri Peninsula are the following:
Ophrys kotschyi, Achillea maritima, Aegilops bicornis, Baldellia ranunculoides, Cistanche phelypaea, Cladium mariscus, Convolvulus lineatus, Erodium crassifolium, Euphorbia pubescens, Ipomoea imperati, Ipomoea sagittata, Isolepis cernua, Juncus littoralis, Juncus maritimus, Linum maritimum, Lotus cytisoides, Mentha aquatica, Pancratium maritimum, Phyla nodiflora, Plantago loeflingii, Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, Serapias parviflora, Triplanche nitens, Urtica membranacea, Vulpia brevis.
